Who is a Resident Medical Officer?

As per the rules, a Resident Medical Officer is a doctor who is a registered medical practitioner who is not working under any recognised training program and is employed by the hospital with the designation of Resident Medical Officer in the second or more years with relevant experience following the graduation. This doctor works exclusively for the particular hospital. 

What is the role of RMO?

Generally, the Resident Medical officers are those senior physicians who manage and work comprehensively on all the aspects related to the patient attendance and care in their specific departments. 

Generally, they are the ones who oversee the daily operations in a hospital, keep a check on the clinical advisors, and help both patients and the doctors in case of any problems during the course of treatment. Furthermore, they are also expected to contribute to medical research programs and help in supervising various clinical trials.

Qualities Of A Good RMO-

  • Specialist– The first and the foremost important thing the RMO should be the master of his subject. He should be specialist and experienced in the field. Highly experienced RMO can help others in a better way. His experience will help the patients as well as the other doctors. A hospital should first check the whole experience and also authentic medical records before making an appointment. This is an important protocol for the safety of the patients. 
  • A Team Player– An RMO is not simply a doctor, who will take OPD’s, check the patients and the work is done. An  Resident Medical Officer is one who is supposed to manage all the patient care. He should be a team player and work closely with his team of doctors. RMO should keep visiting the in-hospital patients, go for rounds and check their progress. The RMO should be regularly in-touch with his other doctors and discuss the cases. He/She can offer their advice and work closely with his subordinate. All in all the RMO is totally responsible for the working of the hospital and the welfare of the patients. 
  • Verifying the complex cases – An RMO cannot leave complex cases on the junior or visiting faculty. It is important the RMO should work on their own on complex cases and chart out treatment plans according to the needs and requirements. 
  • Ensure high standards of patient care– It is the duty of an RMO to maintain high standards of patient care in the hospital. If any patient is facing any problem then the RMO should look into the matter and do the needful. 
  • Hiring the staff– RMO is also responsible for hiring other staff members including junior doctors, visiting doctors and nurses. This is one of the most important functions. RMO should choose them carefully, after checking their credentials and experience.
